IFAS is the leading Swiss trade fair for medical and hospital equipment
Thanks to medical technology, a lot of people all over the world are able to enjoy life free from pain. Very few people, however, are aware of what a huge contribution the Swiss medical technology industry makes to the well-being of so many people. Switzerland has an excellent international reputation as a production site for medical technology services. Pioneering innovations, such as the pacemaker, were invented here and help to ensure that the quality of life continues to improve for people of all ages all around the world.
IFAS is held every two years and plays an important role in the Swiss healthcare system. It brings both a wide range of industry experts, as well as the general public, closer to visible and invisible services provided by the industry. Practically all the trade fair visitors are specialist staff. Highly-trained nurses or caregivers make up 38 percent of those making or influencing decisions regarding the purchase of medical technology products, whereas 11 percent are doctors, eight percent are administrators, seven percent are therapists and seven percent are medical assistants. Most work in hospitals (31%), in nursing homes or as caregivers (2%), in doctor's surgeries (18%) and as therapists (5%).
The medical technology market in Switzerland: an economic gem
Virtually everyone has come into contact with medical technology products, be it a plaster, a thermometer or a wheelchair. Medical technology comprises a total of about 10 000 product lines and provides jobs for 40 000 people. Swiss companies are among the best at manufacturing implants, hearing aids, diagnostic measuring devices and surgical systems. A number of global market leaders have their headquarters in Switzerland or got their start here. However, the medical technology industry in Switzerland is also characterised by traditional small and medium-sized enterprises, whose market share is 95%. A third of them generate less than 1 million Swiss francs in sales. Another third of the highly specialised companies present here earn between 1 and 10 million Swiss francs from medical technology products and the final third generate sales of more than 10 million. According to FASMED, the umbrella organisation of the Swiss trade and industry associations of medical technology, of the total annual sales of more than 6 billion Swiss francs generated, between 500 and 600 million Swiss francs are invested in research, which receives high international acclaim.
Exhibition and communication platform supported by associations
IFAS has for many years received the support of industry associations such as FASMED - the umbrella organisation of the Swiss trade and industry associations of medical technology, the Swiss Technology Network - swissT.net Medical, FMH Services - the service organisation of the Swiss Medical Association (FMH), and H+ The Swiss Hospital Association - the association of hospitals, clinics and rest homes, which have contractually guaranteed their cooperation for several years to come. This commitment highlights the high status of the IFAS as not only an exhibition platform for the medical technology industry, but also as a communication platform.
